LE MERIDIEN PHUKET CERTIFIED WITH TWO-YEAR ‘GOLD AWARD’ BY TRAVELIFE FOR SUSTAINABLE OPERATION, SOCIAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMME
Phuket, Thailand – Sep 03, 2019 – Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort recently achieved a ‘Gold Award Certification’ from Travelife, an independent and internationally recognized accommodation sustainability programme based in London that is accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
According to Travelife, the multi-awarded Resort next to a secluded beach and 5 kms from Patong, “Has shown evidence that they are taking action in the following areas: Minimising their environmental impacts, improving the economic and social impacts for people in their community, respecting and protecting human rights and fair labour practices, and safeguarding animal welfare and biodiversity.”
“We are elated to receive this certification as it represents our staunch commitment to sustainable operations,” says Julian Lowry, Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort General Manager.
He adds, “Our programmes and activities are anchored around serving the community as well as minimizing our impact on the environment. We are committed to waste reduction, efficient energy management, water conservation, and active participation in community green programmes.”
Le Méridien Phuket has received numerous industry and government awards for its environmental programmes including Five Green Leaf Certification from the Board of Environmental Promotion of Tourism Activities (BEFTA) since 2001.
For the past 20 years, the resort has maintained a multi-department ‘Green Council’ to ensure the continuous implementation of environment and energy conservation efforts and is tasked to increase awareness of these programs amongst current and new hire associates. These activities include beach cleaning, tree planting, school painting, World Clean-Up Day, and Upcycling the Oceans Drive.
The Resort has continued to invest resources for this aim. In March 2016, it completed a THB 7.5-Million upgrade of its on-site waste-water treatment plant. In 2017, in line with its commitment to reduce plastic waste, the Resort discontinued use of plastic bottles in guest rooms and suites, replacing these with glass bottles. Plastic straws are no longer used in its restaurants and bars since last year.
Marriott International Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board, Mr Bill Marriott and President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Arne Sorensen on 27 February 2019, announced Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort as recipient of the ‘Debbie Marriott Harrison TakeCare Award of Excellence’ for 2019.
Launched in 2016, the Debbie Marriott Harrison TakeCare Award of Excellence recognizes a managed property, department or above-property team for demonstrating significant achievements in creating a culture of associate health and wellbeing. The Resort was chosen amongst Marriott International’s 6,700 hotels and resorts worldwide.
